Unexpected Challenges on a Mountain Ride

Last weekend, my wife had plans to meet a friend of hers, which left me with the opportunity to spend the day outdoors. This time of year is significant as it was one of the last autumn weekends before winter truly sets in. It is already November, and while the sun remains strong, the temperatures in the shade can be quite chilly.

Decisions to Make

I found myself pondering whether to go for a hike or a cycling ride. Earlier in the week, I had planned to undertake a bike and hike adventure. I had just ordered a pair of cycling shoes designed for both hiking and cycling, which added excitement to my plans. Naturally, I wanted to test them out. Unfortunately, the shoes did not fit properly, and I returned them. As a result, my options were reset. After considering my choices, I decided to keep things simple and stick to my original plan of a biking adventure.

The Journey Begins

I started from my home and drove approximately 10 kilometers to the foot of the mountain. From there, I cycled about 6 kilometers up an asphalt road, gaining the first 400 meters of elevation. As expected, the temperature dropped once I entered the shade, but fortunately, I had dressed appropriately for the varying conditions. Continuing on, I cycled an additional 3.5 kilometers on a forest road, which again gained 400 meters of elevation. I remembered cycling this part last year, and it had been steep and challenging for me at that time. This time, the steepness remained – of course – , but I was pleased to find that it felt much more manageable. That was really a very motivating experience and I was in a super good mood.

An Unexpected Challenge

Upon reaching my destination, I parked my bike and aimed to hike towards a cabin. I knew from previous visits that the cabin would be closed for the season. However, this meant fewer people would be around, allowing for a quieter experience. Just as I parked my bike, I suddenly realized a problem. I had my keys, but I had forgotten a lock. What a pity! I certainly did not want to leave my bike unlocked, so I had to reassess my plans. With no other option available, I decided to take a rest and recover a bit while enjoying the view. During this time, I struck up a pleasant conversation with a fellow cyclist. It turned out that he was an eMTB driver and we had the funny situation:
Him: At your age, I also drove with a bio bike.
I just lifted my eybrow.
Him: C’mon. You’re not even 40!
I smiled and shook my head a bit.
Him: C’mon. Or just turned 40!
I smiled and shook my head a bit.
Him: But I’m at least 10 years older!
I laughed and just ensured him that it’s all right – I don’t judge!

As I listened to him share stories of his adventures, I decided to embrace the situation and go for another route. After he parted for the summit I spend a couple of more minutes, then took my bike, and continued on towards the next summit ahead.

A Rewarding Decision

This turned out to be a very good decision. I had never biked that section before, and the scenery was stunning. Along the way, I stopped at another closed hut for a brief rest. Once again, I chatted with another bike and hike enthusiast, exchanging experiences and tips about our favorite routes. Afterward, I hopped back on my bike and began my journey back home.

While I was unable to complete the hiking portion of my original plan, it still turned out to be a wonderful day. The adventure allowed me to reconnect with nature, meet new people, and enjoy the beauty of the mountains. I even arrived home shortly after my wife, making it possible for us to spend the rest of the day together.
